Ten Selected to All-American Team as Renegades Prepare for Post-Season

BOSTON — Ten players from the Boston Renegades have been recognized as All-Americans by the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA). The complete All-American team rosters were revealed on the WFA’s website and social media platforms on June 11.

First Team players are invited to represent the league’s National Conference at the WFA All-American Game in advance of the WFA National Championship Game. Both games take place on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on the campus of Kennesaw (Ga.) State University.

Rather than playing in the All-American showcase, the players prefer to return to the national championship game. “It is a great honor to be selected,” said All-American linebacker Allie Genereux, “but this is a team sport, and the only thing that matters to me is helping us bring a championship to Boston.” The Renegades reached the league title match in 2017 but did not complete their mission for a women’s tackle football trophy.

A long road awaits the team in the 2018 postseason, as they must first travel to western Pennsylvania to meet the Pittsburgh Passion on June 30 for a quarterfinal match. A victory will likely put Boston on the road again, to Maryland to face the top seeded D.C. Divas on July 14.

Postseason travel and lodging expenses pose a challenge for women’s football teams. Without the benefit of a major corporate sponsors, a robust playoff fundraising campaign is a necessity. Donations and merchandise purchases can be made at bostonrenegadesfootball.com.

Earning her seventh all-star selection in eight seasons, Bonds not only plays cornerback, but is a Top 20 pass receiver, Top 25 rusher on offense, and a Top 5 kick returner in the league. Prior to her football career, she was an outstanding basketball player at Brockton (Mass.) High School. Bonds later helped Bentley University Women’s Basketball to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2003 and was named Defensive Player of the Year by the Northeast 10 Conference.

She still holds single game records for points scored, field goals made, and 3-point field goals made, and is the third all-time point scorer in school history.

Sami Bloom #44, Cornerback, WFA Second Team All-American
In her third year, Bloom has emerged as strong tackler while leading the league in passes defended. This is her first All-American selection. Before pursuing football, Bloom was a perennial top 5 diver in the NESCAC in four years at Tufts University.

Vicky Eddy #45, Linebacker, WFA Second Team All-American
This is the eighth all-star selection for the veteran player who has helped pave the way for women’s football in Boston over the last 18 years. Eddy is among the team leaders in tackles, sacks, and pass deflections. Prior to football, Eddy excelled at high school soccer in her native Rutland, Vt., where she was selected multiple years as all-league and all-state goalkeeper. She continued her athletic career playing soccer and softball at St. Anselm’s College.

Rese Woodfine #79, Offensive Tackle, WFA Second Team All-American
In her eighth season, Woodfine has been a constant force on Boston’s offensive line at the right tackle position. This is her fourth All-American selection. Originally from Springfield, Mass., Woodfine still holds Commerce High track and field records for shot put and discus which she set in 2003.

Jessica Penta #85, Defensive Tackle, WFA Second Team All-American
“Penta Power” is the name given to the hallmark determination of this six-time all star. Penta is among the team leaders in total tackles, tackles for loss, and fumble recoveries. A native of Revere, Mass., Penta excelled as a soccer goalie at Revere High, and later at UMASS Boston, where she lead all NCAA Division III goalkeepers in saves and average saves her rookie year.
