BOSTON — The Boston Renegades women’s football team sent the following letter to fans regarding the cancellation of their 2020 season. The Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) announced on May 2 that their 2020 championship season was cancelled due to health and safety concerns related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The Renegades and WFA were only a few weeks away from their early-April season openers when the rapid spread of COVID-19 forced nationwide closures and restrictions on group gatherings which included team practices, classroom sessions, and games. On March 12, the WFA announced a postponement while targeting a return in June, but the league board later determined that a return to play in 2020 would not be possible.
The Renegades, in pursuit of a third consecutive national championship title, now set their sights on the 2021 season.
Dear Renegades Faithful,
We hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. We are writing to share the sad news that the 2020 season of the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
In their official announcement, the League voiced sound concerns for the health and safety of the players, coaches, fans and community as the primary reasons for cancelling the season.
While we understand and support the decision, we are heartbroken to not have the opportunity to compete this year and to bring another Championship to the City of Boston, our fans and you — our wonderful community.
While we had not yet played a game, we were four months into the 2020 Season before the cancellation. During these months we practiced at our indoor facilities, worked with trainers and coaching staff, took a trip to Baltimore for joint practice sessions with the Nighthawks, and conducted virtual classroom/film learning sessions. We are proud of the progress we’d made towards another Championship and along with your continued support, we will parlay that passion and dedication into 2021.
We would like to thank those of you who have already purchased season tickets. We will be making refunds via PayPal upon request. [By now, all season-ticket holders should have been contacted directly. If you have not been contacted, please get in touch with us.] If you are financially able, we ask you to consider treating your contribution as a donation towards the season. This would allow us to defray some of our expenses and help ensure the long-term viability of our team.
Our situation is fluid, and we are currently working on ways to enable our dedicated players an opportunity to play football and build community before 2021. Whether it’s open practices, clinics, or tryouts our goal is to be back on the field as soon as we can safely do so. And we would love to have you there with us when that happens! Please check our website for updates throughout the year.
Lastly, thank you. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to support the Boston Renegades. We are so sorry to disappoint you but we are fired up to be back in 2021, to come together, work hard and to bring home another Championship.
